Vanishing pride

Habakkuk 1:12
Are You not from everlasting, O Lord my God, my Holy One? We shall not die. O Lord, You have appointed them for judgment; O Rock, You have marked them for correction. NKJV

I have said it before and I shall say it again: I am old enough to remember turning off the old black and white TV set and seeing the picture collapse into a bright dot in the centre of the screen before seeming to diminish and vanish into the infinite distance of the grey-green cathode ray tube. Distance has a vanishing point to our ever-searching eyes. As we stand on our own particular point on the time line and stare either as far back into time as we can see or as far into the future as our dreams or nightmares might carry us, we could also say that we peer from ‘vanishing point to vanishing point’, or as the Hebrew might express it: from everlasting to everlasting.

God is from everlasting. Like a large compass He stretches from the vanishing point to vanishing point and at each point along the line, He is fully present there, all at once, at the same time. Indeed, He is even before the historical eastward appearing vanishing point and after the westward disappearing future one, yes, God encompasses all and is in all. God is from the before beginning. He is from the East. He is the unchanging and ever certain light of the day and Jesus is His bright and morning star! What God has decreed, will come to pass. What God has covenanted shall not be broken. What God has declared will not be found to be a lie. Therefore, Habakkuk bases his incredulous intercession now on the tried and tested, proved and not found wanting, historical revelation of the very person of God Himself: Jehovah. Following this, Habakkuk also immediately testifies regarding the unyielding and holy nature of Jehovah and then wraps it all in the associative cry of his own dear heart. “Are You not from everlasting, O Lord MY God, MY Holy One?” As Matthew Henry intimates, Habakkuk might be saying: “We are an offending people and You are an offended God. Yet, we are still Your offended people and you are still our offended God.” I like that.

The Christian then may offend his heavenly Father, but He is still His heavenly Father to offend! Yes, the son may shame His heavenly Father, but He is still His heavenly Father’s son! Do you see this? So, at all points then, and in any situation and in any land, yes, the blood bought believer, no matter in what shade of darkness he might find himself in, can always say, “Are You not from everlasting, O Lord MY God, MY Holy One?”

We can and more than that, Habakkuk now intercedes with three most certain and fantastic, full faith declarations. Here they are:

1. We shall not die. O Lord, 
2. You have appointed them for judgment. 
3. O Rock, You have marked them for correction.

Habakkuk sees the truth of the situation. God shall preserve a remnant. Israel shall not utterly be wiped from the face of the earth. Further than this, just as the Nazis found out, the proud judgment sword are also appointed themselves for judgment! Unlike Israel, they shall disappear forever! Indeed, in Germany of old, even the Swastika, that emblem of a once all conquering regime, eventually became that very mark of international contempt, which caused both the former wearers and its acceptable use, to be removed from history forever.

So shall God always deal In such a way with the proud people of this planet.

Listen:- The pride of your heart has deceived you, You who dwell in the clefts of the rock, Whose habitation is high; You who say in your heart, 'Who will bring me down to the ground?' Though you ascend as high as the eagle, And though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down," says the Lord. NKJV Obadiah 3-4

Pray: -  Lord, before you have to humble me, I humble myself before You of King of ages and Lord of all. Father, thank You that You are faithful and despite my waywardness and willfulness, You are still my Father and I am still Your son. So then O Lord might we always say from any pig trough: “I will arise and go to my Father and say, Father….”

Of Jennels, Jiggers, Snickleways & Twittens

I presently live on the border of East Sussex and the county of Kent and my part of South Tunbridge Wells is riddled with well established and beautiful ‘Cut Throughs’ and ‘Short Cuts’ between all the walls and hedges, fences and houses. In my home county of Derbyshire we call these short cuts, these new ways, ‘Jennels’ and in other part of the country they are referred to as ‘Jiggers’ or ‘Snickleways,’ (isn’t that cute!) but down here in this part of the ‘Soft and Sunny South,’ they are delightfully referred to as ‘Twittens.’

A Synapse is a highly specialized junction either between two neurons (nerve cells) or a neuron and a protein cell which in turn allows the transmission of chemical and electrical signals, resulting in a quick cascade of a physical response. These established synaptic pathways are of course especially important in brain function and can be easily destroyed by anything from drugs to disease, thus limiting the capacity of brain functionality. The brain however is quite remarkable, especially in younger people, in that even with the destruction of existing synaptic pathways, others can be established as time goes on.

Now, I have neither the knowledge or understanding to correctly communicate how the brain works, but then who does! The investigation and understanding of brain function and the defining of intelligence and consciousness seems almost as accurate as describing a single star on the Eagle Nebula. Yup, I reckon we understand about that much! Never the less, this phenomenon of the damaged brain's capacity to establish new ‘Cut Throughs’ and ‘Short Cuts,’ or if you will, new ‘Jennels’ ‘Snickleways’ and ‘Twittens’, is quite remarkable.

My point tonight is this: In the establishment and growth of towns and cities, human beings have always been in the business of establishing ‘Twittens,’ those quicker and often prettier ‘Cut Throughs,’ so as to arrive speedier and more refreshed at their desired destination. In the same way, even nature, from rivers to streams and from the establishment or re-establishment of broken brain synaptic pathways, has been in the business of making ways were there are none. Do you not think tonight then, that our God can make for you WAYS where at the moment there are none? Of course He can! So, to some of you tonight, I need to tell you that GOD CAN MAKE A WAY! Trust Him in this.

Listen: - No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. (1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV.)

Pray:- It is a very simple prayer of mine tonight dear Jesus, please make a way, open up a new way, a hidden way, a forgotten way, where at the moment there appears to be none. In Jesus name I pray, amen.

Real Yeast For The Bread Of Victory

By the summer of 1942, the Allies were in trouble throughout the whole of Europe. The German attack in “Operation Barbarossa” had pushed the Russians far back into their own land and much of western Europe, seemed to be in the full control of the Nazis. In the battle of the Atlantic, German U-boats were having a major effect on the supplying of Britain and the war, which was being fought in the desert of North Africa, was slipping through the Allied hands like the dry desert sand. Indeed, if the Afrika Korps under Rommel had ever got to the Suez, it would have broken the arms of the Allie’s supply routes. The psychological and factual blow of losing the Suez Canal to the Nazis would have been incalculable, especially as this would have given them near enough free access to all the oil in the Middle East.

The bottleneck battle of El Alamein then, was to be the last stand for the Allies in North Africa. Though the leader of the German forces on the ground, Field Marshal Rommel, was much respected by even the Allied forces, the Allies' very own commander, Auchinleck, was not! On top of this, thus far in the war, Winston Churchill being without even one victory to his name,  faced the threat of a vote of ‘no confidence’ in the British parliament. Auchinleck then was speedily replaced with a well tried leader and popular leader. Well, at least popular amongst the troops, if not amongst his peers! The new General was described as being ‘As quick as a ferret and about as likeable!’ Nevertheless, by ensuring the co-operation of all arms at his command, including the air force, coupled with the use of first-class logistical back-up and the issuing of clear-cut orders, the ferret engendered great morale which was the force that turned the war around! Just before the Battle of El Alamein, he met privately with his commanding officers and encouraged and motivated them by saying:-

"Here we will stand and fight.
There will be no further withdrawal. I have orders, that all plans and instruction dealing with further withdrawal are to be burnt, and at once!
The great point to remember is that we’re going to finish with this chap Rommel once and for all, It will be quite easy. There’s no doubt about it,
he’s definitely a nuisance. Therefore we will hit him a crack and finish him."

If you are a leader, then communication, organisation, co-ordination and clarity of objective are vital in achieving any victory. However, all of these vital ingredients of victory, will be like trying to bake bread without yeast if you have not got the ability to inspire the confidence in the achievement of your objective. The Ferret had the ability to inject the yeast of inspiration into his commanding officers and his troops and that my friends, made all the difference in the world! Indeed, it is said that once Monty took charge of his 8th Army, the desert rats, they had hardly no sickness or absenteeism whatsoever. Imagine that!

The last book of the Bible, the Revelation of Jesus Christ, is the yeast that makes the bread of life. Christ’s victory, His majestic Lordship, His all- conquering capacity is clearly and awesomely portrayed before our open ears and open mouths! So, if you are in need of inspiration tonight, inspiration tomorrow and inspiration on your third day, then read the book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ and once you’ve done that, read it again! For without this yeast of inspiration, there shall be no rising in your life!

Listen: - Then he said to me, "These words are faithful and true.” And the Lord God of the holy prophets sent His angel to show His servants the things which must shortly take place. “Behold, I am coming quickly! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.” Revelation 22:6-7 NKJV

Pray:- Lord, I ‘knead’ inspiration tonight! So, teach me how to delight myself in Your majestic greatness, for it is in Your magnificent name I ask it, amen.

The Mark Of The Lion

After an almost complete collapse in the sale of eggs in 1956, the British Egg Marketing Board was set up to promote this most natural of food sources by purchasing all the eggs produced in the UK, grading them to a national standard and then stamping them with a lion logo as a testimony to that high quality which would be seen by the customer, and so communicate to them that this egg was safe, that this egg was disease free, that this egg was even above the expected legal standards! Yes, this egg was approved!

In our text for tonight, Paul says that he and his team are lion stamped, approved eggs. The face of their sky has been seen and discerned, yes, even like five new yoke of oxen, they have been yoked and driven, pushed and pulled, and found to still plough a straight line! They have been thoroughly examined under the grading microscope of God and being found free of falseness, free of disease and free of self-seeking guile, have thus been retained in His service as a most excellent product. God so believed in them, that he entrusted the Gospel to them.

In God’s economy, before any apostolic entrusting, there comes a trying, a testing, a grading and a stamping. Much of what we see today (and it’s not new) of people who count themselves as apostles, as folk entrusted with special knowledge, even Divine favour, fire, gifts and new spiritual insight are nothing short of rotten eggs! They are ungraded, and upon examination bear no mark of the lion they say they represent, but rather they bear the odour of a deceptive and pocket-lining guile.

1. God’s school colours are black and blue, look for those colours.
2. God graduates don’t give two hoots for the favour of men and the backing of names. Look for that.
3. All of God’s approved men bear the mark of being with the Lion. So, look for the claw marks, the punctured flesh, especially around the back of the neck, the limp, indeed, look for any evidence of the heavenly damage, if you will.
4. Finally, and this is important, all of God’s approved men, have been taught by heaven just how to roar. Listen for that roar in their powerful proclamation.

If you come across any egg not bearing the stamp of the Lion, avoid it like the plague, for in the end it will be found tasteless, yokeless, poisonous.

Listen: - We never used words to butter you up. No one knows that better than you. And God knows we never used words as a smoke screen to take advantage of you. Even though we had some standing as Christ's apostles, we never threw our weight around or tried to come across as important, with you or anyone else. We weren't aloof with you. We took you just as you were. We were never patronizing, never condescending, but we cared for you the way a mother cares for her children. We loved you dearly. Not content to just pass on the Message, we wanted to give you our hearts. And we did. You remember us in those days, friends, working our fingers to the bone, up half the night, moonlighting so you wouldn't have the burden of supporting us while we proclaimed God's Message to you. You saw with your own eyes how discreet and courteous we were among you, with keen sensitivity to you as fellow believers. And God knows we weren't freeloaders! You experienced it all firsthand. With each of you we were like a father with his child, holding your hand, whispering encouragement, showing you step-by-step how to live well before God, who called us into his own kingdom, into this delightful life. Pray:- Lord, give me a nose for bad eggs, even before they are cracked open. Lord, help me to discern the mark of the Lion on those you have approved and entrusted with Your good news. In Jesus name I pray, amen.

Building On A Math’s Lesson For Moles With Memory Problems

We Protestants against spiritual abuse, against doctrinal deviousness, yes, we reformers of a previous and terrible travesty of pure religion, now hang our certain and hopeful hats on five giant pegs, those being:-

1 Sola Scriptura (“by Scripture alone”)
2 Sola Fide (“by Faith alone”)
3 Sola Gratia (“by Grace alone”)
4 Solus Christus (“Christ alone”)
5 Soli Deo Gloria (“Glory to God alone”)

How wonderful.

It is therefore a real shame that the outworking of these five central pillars of Protestantism, of Biblical Christianity, have on the whole led to an ever emergent and “lazy ass” Christian. We have become far too much at ease with the once wonderfully simple marriage of faith and grace, which seem nowadays to have given up producing vigorous, respectful, thankful and sacrificial offspring and have somehow been left with a nasty nest of twittering cuckoos, all over-fat children, who in their subsequent and sedentary post-modern growth, display little relation to the revelation of Scripture, which that marriage of faith and grace once so wonderfully proclaimed, and so subsequently, they have no heart or inclination, no stomach and no staying power, to either know what they should look like, desire to become nor be determined to die for. This must be rectified. We Protestants have gone soft.

Our text for tonight, is built on a ‘Therefore.’ So, looking at the previous verses in the opening of Second Peter, we see they speak of a multiplication of a Divine grace and peace, which in turn results in a super abundance of faithful and fruity action! 2 Peter 1: 5-9, is in fact a math’s lesson for blind moles with memory problems and is rooted in the superabundance of the promises of God and therefore prefixed with a very demanding and all encompassing action phrase, translated as, ‘Giving all diligence!’ Phew, I am tired already! Yup, this maths lesson for moles with memory problems demands ACTION. Indeed, the word diligence here, is from which we derive our English word, SPEED. Peter says in effect, “Give all eagerness, all earnestness, all business, all forwardness, haste, despatch, diligence, yes, give all SPEED, to add my previously stated seven ‘active ingredients’ to your Christian life. Why? Well because if you do not, you will turn into a smelly blind mole which burrows in pig swill and bathes in dog vomit.” Simple!

So, now in our text for tonight, Peter goes on to say, “Be EVEN MORE diligent.” Peter uses the verb SPOUDAZO here, so in other words he says, “Hey, move faster still folks, for when it comes to being SURE of your calling and election, I want you to PUT YOUR SPEEDOS ON!” Oh, yes indeed! We might paraphrase Peter then by saying, “Oi! If your knowledge and testimony, if your service and story of present salvation and future happiness is as real as you say it is; if it is truly through God’s grace, by faith alone in Christ alone, resting in the Scriptures alone and all for the glory of God alone, then show me the active goods! No, more than that, forget assuring me so much of your salvation, rather, ASSURE YOURSELF! Yes, make your calling and election forcefully firm to your own heart. Make it steadfast, make it sure and certain to yourself! Do this all the time. Yes, let your action reveal your faith, first of all to yourself .”

Friends, the outcome of such a speedy and consistent effort which is rooted in those five Scriptural pillars, is that you shall run so confidently, that you shall never run and ruin yourselves in the bumbling and blind blundering of ignorant little moles. Now that’s magnificent!

Listen: - But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." And he was called the friend of God. You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. James 2:20-24 NKJV

Pray:- Lord, deliver me from the bondage of works, but help me always to righty and continually, make both my calling and election sure. In Jesus name I ask it, amen.

The Pro-Video Vintage of God In The Places of Dark Providences

Yes the word providence does come from two Latin words, PRO, meaning ‘before’ and VIDEO meaning ‘to see.’ Providence then, means ‘to see before.’

If we are going on a journey, setting up a business, we plan before hand, we try and ‘see before,’ just what might happen; we project and therefore prepare for any occurrence, especially the possibility of the unexpected! Now, not in the same way, no, in a far greater way, God also ‘sees before.’ We could say that ‘God plans what will happen and has prepared for His beloved children especially great provisions, for in His case, God plans for the expected, not the unexpected! However, I sometimes wonder though, if God might maybe continually EXPERIENCE knowledge for the first time! If so, how do you plan for that! I remember Jesus was amazed, surprisingly shocked at the unbelief of the Jews as well as the faith of a Gentile centurion! In any event, I know that if God is indeed most marvellously ‘informed and delighted’ or really annoyed and let down when He experiences the fruit of foreknowledge, that even so, as a wise Master builder, He has never the less, provided fully for Himself and His family in every expected occurrence.

Yesterday I met with one of my mentors. I was seeking prayer for some chronic and debilitating pain and in so doing, was expressing that common but unspoken knowledge which we all have, that in relationship to pain, there was for me three areas where I lose my sense of both the presence of God with me and the goodness of God toward me! Indeed, I become so ill, that both of these two precious things we experience when in health, become a felt irrelevancy in sickness, for if His presence and His goodness cannot heal my sickness, all I want in these dark providential times is someone to simply get a gun and put me out of my misery!

For me, those three particular instances of 'shoot me now please' illnesses are chronic sea sickness, flu gone wild and any other persistent and debilitating chronic pain, say like a deep molar toothache. My mentor gave me two wise insights saying first that, “The deepest pain a man experiences, is the pain which he is personally experiencing right now, whether it be emotional, psychological, spiritual or physical.” And also some encouragement from Samuel Rutherford, who says that “When I am in the cellar of affliction, I look for the Lord's choicest wines.”

In the presence of such Dark Providences, I would like to tell you tonight, all too briefly, of the catering of God from the Cellar of affliction.

It might seem obvious but first let us acknowledge, that terrible pain exists. For example, on the current ‘Barnham and Bailey’ circus freak type television shows masquerading as personal documentaries, I recently saw a man whose whole face was consumed with a giant tumour which enveloped his sensual features and over the years, had so sucked the nutrition intended for growth of good things into its black and evil self, that it had left him dwarf like in stature and a hunched back as well.. The poor man looked liked the mess of a melted candle. I cannot with all goodness say to such a person that ‘Your terrible condition is planned and prepared and factored into your life by God.’ If you can, then you go tell him! I can however say to him with Scriptural and declared clarity, that his condition is catered for by the Father. Yes, if we adhere to the view that such terrible pain is factored into our lives by the direct hand of good God, then that is indeed a cloud-filled conundrum, some might say, a very Dark Providence indeed, even for the believer. For sure, such a view raises a whole bunch of other questions but for tonight, let me just say that terrible pain is present in our lives BUT, it is catered for by God. In this mess. His mercies are new every morning and indeed, piled up and stacked high quite nearby, in bottles of loving refreshment waiting for the sufferer to taste.

Some of you I know, will be seated on the good seats of the classical doctrine of the Sovereignty of God. Praise the Lord! Enjoy the view and the pontificating game of badminton you can happily engage when in for your position of health. Healthy brethren, I am not speaking to you tonight. I am speaking to those who suffer under such Dark Providences, to those who seek relief and escape. To those who suffer, I am talking about the application of love and medicine and the mild Holy Spirit anaesthetic for the soul.

Naturally, providential or supernaturally, healing will come to some of you tonight. For many more of you though, hid under the cloud of Dark Providences, there is a need to reach out toward the cold and dripping walls of your painful confine, for I am convinced that vintage succour has been laid down in their thousands of bottles against those bulwarks of dusty darkness, bearing the labelic descriptions of ‘Grace Sufficient,’ ‘Perfection in Weakness,’ ‘Glory Despite,’ ‘Stood with me,’ ‘Never be shamed,’ ‘Unto Death,’ ‘Crown of Glory,’ ‘Leaves of Life,’ ‘Roots Reached,’ ‘Casting Care,’ ‘Way of Escape,’ and even, ‘Stomachs Sake,’ and many, many more! Yes I believe that there are bottles of supportive vintage, that will, despite the wrecktitude of our days under these dark, fat clouds that touch the surface of our lives with gross and tremulous pain, that when uncorked, left to breath a while and drunk in thankfulness, shall yet dance like lovelies upon our tepid tongues and be found to be full of the fragrant goodness of God, which is most needful to our present and most unsatisfied condition.

Abstainers under Dark Providences suffer somewhat, yes, they even suffer beyond necessity. Remember that, for tonight some of you need to uncork a couple of bottles and start drinking. Sadly, there are many dear friends, who for whatever reason are beyond the getting, the uncorking and the drinking and to these sorry folk, we the more able, must become the wine waiters of Jesus to them. For there are un-tasted comforts, un-supped restorations and un-swallowed soothings, yet to be imbibed from the well catered for wine cellars of the Most High God!

So, if you are in the cellar of affliction, look for the Lord's choicest wines and always keep a corkscrew in your pocket.

Listen: -Give strong drink to him who is perishing, And wine to those who are bitter of heart. Proverbs 31:6NKJV

Pray:- Lord, give a corkscrew, an open mouth and thankful swallows. Let me taste of Your goodness in all my cellars of affliction, in Jesus name I pray, amen.

Title:- Indescribable, Uncontainable and Completely Unstoppable

Genesis 50:20-24 And Joseph said to his brethren, “I am dying; but God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land to the land of which He swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob".

Surely there was no one more qualified to speak such a certain and faithful word as Joseph did in today’s text? However, Joseph, dreamer of dreams, viewer of visions and well beloved of his father, was nonetheless hated by his brothers and sold as a slave by the people he longed to have love him. Imagine that!

To compound the horror even further, he was then falsely accused of rape and imprisoned for years, only to be left rotting in a dungeon, finally it seemed, forgotten by everyone, even God! Then, maybe as far as Joseph was concerned; after far too many years, God moved into action placing him second in command of the then greatest nation on the planet. God through Joseph would save millions of people from starvation and preserve and restore one of the most dysfunctional families in history, from which, God would also grow a nation that would follow Him and give birth to the promised Messiah, Jesus, the Saviour of the world. What a story!

May I then paraphrase Joseph’s summary of all he had seen under the sun during his long sojourn among us? Here it is: “I am dying, I am leaving the scene. So what! I have learned and truly know, that no matter what may happen, what God has promised to do, He will accomplish. God is faithful, indescribable, uncontainable and completely unstoppable! He will fulfill His faithful word to you.”

So let me ask you my friend today, “What promises has God made to you in the years gone by? What mountains of mess, what swamps of sewage, what cold hearted indifference, what ingrained indolence and tight-fisted rebellion now seem to stand in the way of the fulfillment of His words to you?” As you look, as you consider, let God’s Spirit blow upon the dying flame of your lost confidence today. Believe dear friend; believe what He told you in all the years gone by! For is anything too wonderful for the Lord? No of course not! God is able and intent, yes and intent, on fulfilling all of His promises toward you. So today, dwell upon the unstoppable purposes of Jesus the Christ, in and over your life this year. If he can do it for Joseph, he can most surely do it for you.
