Nabel Was Not Able To Be Bound In The Bundle Of The Living

The new mother gazed lovingly into the eyes of her beloved new born.
“Oh darling” she said to her happy husband,
“Oh darling what shall we call him?”

“My love,” he responded, “Our first born. My firstborn and a son at that! Hallelujah! How about we call him ‘Idiot?’

“A little harsh.” She replied, “A little harsh. How about Stupid?”

“Hmmm” he says, happy but unsure. “Two syllables compared to three. Let’s get back on track, how about ‘Simpleton?’ ”

“Three syllables,” says she, “Oi vey! What’s all this thing about three? Tell you what,” says she,“Let’s cut to the chase with this child and give him a one syllable summary.”

“What do you suggest?” says he expectantly,

“Fool!” she exclaims, “ Let’s call the little darling, FOOL!”
And so the son was named ‘FOOL,’ or as we know him, 'NABEL'.

Nabal was a descendent of that great man of renown, the last man standing of his whole generation, Caleb. Our story for tonight goes to show a few important things, the primary one being that fruit of the loins, very often does fall very far from the tree. Nabal, most certainly did.

Now Nabal was a rich man. I can only assume this is why he happened to get hooked up with a wise and beautiful and well righteous young woman called Abigail. I am always amazed at what rich fools can buy for themselves. Never the less, make no mistake about it, Nabal was a rich fool. Some doctors examining the full story of Nabal’s unhappy demise, looking in 1 Samuel 25, surmise that he suffered from a ‘Circulatory Disease which in the end, probably gave him a cerebral haemorrhage.’ The cause of this disorder, they suggest, is that ‘Nabal was probably a confirmed alcoholic who had arteriosclerosis and associated hypertension with the lesion which killed him, probably being located in one of the atheromatous patches in the brain, and it was that which accounted for the ten day of coma prior to his eventual death.’ Anyone who drinks himself to death is indeed a fool. Are you this kind of fool?

Make no mistake about it, I have met many folks calling themselves Christians, who have been sent home from hospital to die because the doctors know the cause of their illness is alcoholism and nothing else. I ask you again: Are you this kind of FOOL?

Nabal is very simply, emblematic of the fool who rejects God and His anointed. He is drunk on his own goods and his own power. He is a brute, a misuser of men, a miser of his personal riches, a FOOL who regards his personal relations as cattle to be branded and used, even as he so desires. Never the less, David privately protected this man’s goods and his standing, indeed, it was David’s presence in the wilderness that allowed Nabal’s continued and increased prosperity. Imagine that.

At the time of sheep shearing, in an area then dominated by the wool trade, it was the presently proclaimed and future coming King, David son of Jesse, who himself instructed his followers to go and politely, calmly, gently, and with great respect, ask for some recognition of his protection and consequently, just a very small part in Nabal’s prosperity, so that David’s troops may be fed and might be allowed to rejoice along with him at the celebrations. Nabal, was well able, to provide all this.

However, Nabal the fool, feigns ignorance of David, and then questions his lineage and his anointing. David's troops politely leave and when David receives this particular slap in the face, straps on his sword and instructs his followers to do the same. David angrily mounts his steed with the sole purpose of covering its flanks with Nabal’s blood.

It was wise Abigail, who leaving her husband in a drunken stupor, rides to meet David in the way, to try and avert his righteous vengeance. She is successful in the so doing and when, in the mid-morning of the morrow, she then recounts in the ears of her head thumping, husband, the great escape she has engineered for him, he has a heart attack, a brain seizure even and enters into a ten day coma, a coma from which he will never recover. David rejoices in Nabal’s death and then marries the sweet, wise Abigail.

All born fools who in their drunken pride reject the gentle approaches of King Jesus, shall in the end, be killed by God Almighty. All faithful wives bound to such fools, whether by blood or marriage, (listen well now) shall be saved at last and shall be joined to Jesus as His bride.
God paints us a simple picture tonight, a picture that even a fool can understand. Are you a fool tonight?

Listen: - So it was, in the morning, when the wine had gone from Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became like a stone. Then it happened, after about ten days, that the Lord struck Nabal, and he died. 1 Samuel 25:37-38 NKJV  

Pray:- Please, let not my Lord regard this scoundrel Nabal. For as his name is, so is he: Nabal is his name, and folly is with him! But I, your servant, ask you to hold back from coming in bloodshed and from avenging Yourself with Your own hand. Now then, let your enemies and those who seek harm for my Lord be as Nabal, but as for me and my house, please forgive the sins of your servant and let our lives be bound in the bundle of the living, the living people, who follow You with all their hearts. Amen. NKJV
