Key Word:- LOVE
Title:- The Sweet Singer
Song of Songs 1:2 Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth…
Charles Wesley died today in 1788. The co-founder of Methodism, he was indeed one of the most prolific poets of the English language. In 1736, after serving as secretary to the Governor of Georgia, he returned to England “broken in spirit by misrepresentations and accusations of scandal at the hands of unprincipled people.” However, it was then he found Christ and became a preacher, some say, a preacher even on par with the famous George Whitfield himself and so much so, that he was named, the 'Sweet Singer of Methodism.’
What was Charles’ secret source of power, his secret source inspiration? It is too easy to say God the Holy Spirit, though in saying so, we would be absolutely correct! So, may I venture my own observation here, for over the years, having observed many people of power and passion, the most successful and history-making folk of this group, all possess one distinct thing lacking in others, that is, ‘They are lovers!’ It’s as simple as that, they are lovers of Jesus. Not with head knowledge mind you but with an open and bruised heart. They are broken people moved by His love. When they speak of their ‘Beloved,’ like Jeremiah of old, their eyes become fountains of tears, their voices crack and struggle like an old car ascending a steep hill; for they are so full of emotion, that they can hardly speak of His dear name; they can hardly express His all consuming love for them, they are thankful to know Him, longing to see Him, deliriously desirous even, of a better country, where He who their soul loves, waits expectantly for them; and they know it friend; and most of all, they know Him!
Let us woo Jesus all the more then. Let us become the Sweet Singers of His love, that we too might fall in passionate love with Him again.
Listen: - Charles Wesley dictated these lines to his wife, when on his death bed: - “In age and feebleness extreme, Who shall a helpless worm redeem? Jesus my only hope Thou art, Strength of my failing flesh and heart, O, could I catch a smile from Thee, And drop into eternity!”
Pray: - Your name is ointment poured forth; Therefore the virgins love you. Draw me away! Draw me away. SOS 1:2
