The cold comfort of a carnal complex toward
a coming calamity

2 Kings 20:17-19
'Behold, the days are coming when all that is in your house, and what your fathers have accumulated until this day, shall be carried to Babylon; nothing shall be left,' says the Lord. 'And they shall take away some of your sons who will descend from you, whom you will beget; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.'" So Hezekiah said to Isaiah," The word of the Lord which you have spoken is good!" For he said, "Will there not be peace and truth at least in my days?" NKJV

I write this Bible Insight in 2013. However, the problem I will address now, though sometimes dormant, has been present since time immemorial, even though I now affix a name to this disease, for that it was it is, as ‘The Carnal Complex of Hezekiah.’ The main symptom of this ‘Carnal Complex’ is a quiet complicity in present rumblings; it is lip telling lies of a coming revival in the face of present and clear judgment; it is the substituting of worldly settledness where there should be a weeping repentance; it is the giving out of sin-cream, sorry, sun-cream when the dark clouds are clearly gathering; it is the pronunciation of ‘peace in our time’ whilst a broomstick-black lipped monster prepares to do away with the people of God once more. Surely, such a presentblindness among the people of God in the face of the evidence of such a present judgment and such a coming trouble is a sure sign that we have settled for a little piece of present comfort to satisfy us, no matter how cold. Why else would we continue as we have done for so long, as though the thunder clouds of coming judgment over our head will never bring a flood of fire upon us? It is because we are carnal. We are diseased. We are happy in the peace of this most wretched time. Now then, how is Hezekiah like the modern church?

King Hezekiah, as you will remember, was often godly in action, especially in the beginning, yes, he was often victorious in faith and pious in practice and, though acting like a squawking ‘chicken’ when it came to facing his own death, he was never the less healed by God and a poultice. Thus, Hezekiah was given an extension on his life, and granted an expansion on his ministry and a great widening of his field of influence. He had seen signs and wonders and he had also become excessively wealthy, even possessing personality, fame, and honor. His Twitter account was enormous and even his enemies liked his Facebook page. Yet, when peace led to pride and his confidence grew beyond all the bounds of his humble thankfulness to God, then, out of his carnal wherewithal (which, by the way, is a bit like a hold-all, only its bigger and smellier and only has room for your own stuff), I say out of his carnal wherewithal, a hard skin of utter selfishness grew over his heart and formed a cataract of unseeing feeling toward the calamity which God had pronounced upon those that would come after him. It’s shocking. I mean it absolutely stinks and it’s here in the church today.

I wonder if the church’s ultimate victory will provide a present comfort to the coming persecuted though, when their daughters will not be able to find a Christian man to marry left in this Island of ours? I know you don’t really believe it though, for if you did, you would pray and live most differently. Yes, I wonder if the church’s ultimate victory will provide a present comfort to the coming persecuted though, when they see their grandchildren dashed against many a proverbial wall? I know you don’t really believe it though, for if you did, you would pray and live most differently. I wonder if the church’s ultimate victory will provide a present comfort to the coming persecuted though, when their goods are spoiled once more, when they will not be allowed in higher education again, when  women rule over them and fight for them and all their sin-sucking children are gay? I know you don’t really believe it though, for if you did, you would pray and live most differently.

Now then, let me ask you today, how many tears have you cried at the prayer meeting this week? No. Didn’t think so.

Listen:- Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus." And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. Acts 4:29-31NKJV

Pray: -  Father, dare I ask it? Put our feet to the fire, just a little, to quickly wake us up. Amen and let it be so.
