Dec | 25 | Habakkuk’s hyperphaigiac hunters

PREPARE

Habakkuk’s hyperphaigiac hunters

Habakkuk 1:8
Their horses also are swifter than leopards, And more fierce than evening wolves. Their chargers charge ahead; Their cavalry comes from afar; They fly as the eagle that hastens to eat. NKJV

There are three things to note then regarding these lion-panther-wolves:

First, that this cavalry is widespread, (Their chargers charge ahead), that is they are all encompassing and proudly pressing on, racing each other to their prey. There is no angle from which they shall not come, there is no place on the compass from which they shall not strike. They are widespread.

Second that they are untiring. Yes indeed, they may have a long distance to travel to come to the cities of Judah, even to the capital Jerusalem, but no matter, they are untiring, un-resting and ever voracious in their all driving and vicious intent. They ‘come on’. They ‘come on’ some more and then they ‘come on’ again. At the end of the round, you may be exhausted and sat on your stool in your corner, gulping in water and being fanned by your second whilst instructed by your coach, but they are still on their feet, skipping around and staring you down, shadow boxing and waiting for the bell to ring again once more. They are as fresh as morning Daisies and as pretty and primed as a Venus Fly Trap.

Thirdly, they are ravenous. They do not come to fight, they come to eat. They come to indulge their excessive and extreme appetite. You see, the battle outcome is not in question here, just the time of dinner.

These mounted bowmen, these spear carrying lancers, were allowed to come upon the covenant nation because the people of God had broken the covenant and now, all the curse their fathers agreed to were about to be beaten around their pitiful self enhancing hearts and their proud , proud heads. There was national sin in Israel and national sin lead to national judgment. We may feel safe in our islands, even in our continent separated from the rest of the world by vast sweeps of water. We may feel safe in our technology, yes, our rockets may form an iron dome above us, our missiles a metal wall before us, and our ICBM’s like a bolero hammer, all trigger ready to crush the heads of any oncoming Numpties foolish enough to try to take us out or take us over. No matter. I say, no matter. For when God, with vengeance in His heart, moves out of a nation’s way, then the great unseen sea wall of protection is removed and swiftly, like a high tided and angry sea, yes, like an all concrete toppling Tsunami, a volcano in the East can devastate and overrun even all the inlands of the West.

We are not Israel. But we are a nation once blessed by God, once under God, once proud to call the LORD our God. Now, we are not Israel. But they are a nation which forgot God and so are we. Look what happened to them.

Fear of judgment has not pushed our nations back toward the Lord. Financial disaster has not pushed our nations back to God. Tower toppling terrorism has not pushed our nation back to God. Disease and the terrible dismemberment of our soldiers, all blown to pieces on foreign battle fields has not pushed our nation back to God. The collapse of all things we counted as precious: marriage; family; babies; has not pushed our nations back to God. Neither has the rise of any social monstrosity pushed us back to God. No, in the sight of all these things, the church of the living God is still singing love songs whilst handing out sick bags to drunks on a Saturday night. Consequently, our nation has not been called back to God and neither has it any inination to be called back. In my dreams, I hear hoof beats. And in the day, I feel the pounding of the ground. Judgment is coming. Are you ready?

In my dreams, I hear hoof beats. And in the day, I feel the pounding of the ground. Judgment is coming. Are you ready?

Listen:- The Lord will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand, a nation of fierce countenance, which does not respect the elderly nor show favor to the young. And they shall eat the increase of your livestock and the produce of your land, until you are destroyed; they shall not leave you grain or new wine or oil, or the increase of your cattle or the offspring of your flocks, until they have destroyed you. Deuteronomy 28:49-51 NKJV
