True and straight with lots to offer

Song of Solomon 7:6-9
How fair and how pleasant you are, O love, with your delights! This stature of yours is like a palm tree, And your breasts like its clusters. I said, "I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of its branches." Let now your breasts be like clusters of the vine, The fragrance of your breath like apples, And the roof of your mouth like the best wine. NKJV

Our text for today undoubtedly is the most quoted text of smiling young theology students, all reformed and restless and ready for bed. The sooner they get married the better. A few years down the road with two kids under their belt and they will be longing for a rest and happy to camp out at the bottom of that palm tree after a long day at work and an even longer driver home.

Again, the Song of Songs speaks on a number of levels here and three in particular. First around Mr. and Mrs. Solomon, or Solomon and the Solomoness. Secondly, around the physical life relationship between a husband and a wife, Thirdly around the relationship between Christ and His church. Concerning the physical relationship then between a husband and a wife, bucolically speaking of course, the husbands focus should be his wife's breasts. Hers and no one else's. Listen up fella. The lifelong comfort of your wife's own arms and the delights that lay between them are the only place of your visual, thoughtful and practical comfort. No where else! Listen up lady. You had better make sure the bed of your being is open to your husband and is both welcoming and giving. Some might say that this is just ‘base’ comment. I say it is basic to the holy marriage bed and is thoroughly biblical. If you are open, welcoming and giving, then physical love is simple as is all its mutual pleasures. “Drink water from your own cistern, And running water from your own well. Should your fountains be dispersed abroad, Streams of water in the streets? Let them be only your own, And not for strangers with you. Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice with the wife of your youth. As a loving deer and a graceful doe, Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; And always be enraptured with her love. For why should you, my son, be enraptured by an immoral woman, And be embraced in the arms of a seductress?” Proverbs 5:15-20 NKJV

I have lived for some time in south Florida though eventually bored with the foliage, was still truck both then and now with the upright nature of the Golden Palm trees. Yes, and I am still struck now by their concrete solid standing, their straightness and their most majestic height.

Concerning the church then, how should we walk look upon this earth? We should walk like a golden Palm tree, we should walk like a fine fashion model. Yes, we should be upright, true, high and lofty, our eyes focusing straight ahead in the far off distance and may I say, to the things of this world, we should be somewhat disdainful and very aloof. In the Song of Solomon we have already seen that the church is going to be the most special thing ‘ever!’ in all the ages to come. There is every reason then that the church militant, that is, the church alive and spirtually battling to spread the gospel of Jesus in this world right now, should be exhibiting this ‘model like’ behaviour right now. Christian, you are part of this upright Golden Palm. May solid uprightness, true dignity and worldly disdainfulness be the marks of all your working this fine expectant day.

Listen:- Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation. 1 Peter 2:11-12 NKJV

Pray: - Father, fear bends me out of shape. Father, unbelief undermines my straightness. Comfort me with the uprightness of Your presence and stand me upright in the experience of Your steadfast love for me. Amen and amen.
